Harley Nightrod too much power for a first bike?

harley
Chad T asked:

I am very experienced with dirt bikes and have been looking into buying a harley. The sportsters are a little too small for my size, and I really like the way the nightrod looks, but is it going to be too much power for me?

Probably not. Depends how you ride it.

Piece of cake , just go easy on the throtle till you get the handle of it !

It’s not too powerful. Harley’s are easier to ride than they look. They have a low center of gravity and their weight will offset some of the horsepower.

It’s about 107hp. Close to that of a 600 sportbike but way heavier and none of the agility. If you want to pay that much money for an antique, knock yourself out. If you are way experienced with dirt-bikes I’m sure you have the skills to keep the rubber side down.

Given your experience with dirt bikes, you should have no problem with a Night Rod. You will have a better feel for the bike than someone without dirt riding experience. I still credit to this day my dirt riding abilities for saving me many times over on the road.
    Good Luck

Dirt bike experiance is very good. This will allow you to step up to the plate. Go for it. Maybe invest in a set of crash bars. Mostly a person doesnt crash at 50, they crash at 3mph in a parking lot. A set of bars will save you a bundle of jangled nerves if it falls over.

It’s a lot of bike, 240 mm rear tire , 1250cc, 125 HP, slipper clutch, optional ABS, but start out slow and work your way up. You can handle it. Its a very high tech, very agile, very good handling bike. Worth every penny. Go for it.

I have an 07 V-Rod its nice not uncontrollable don’t worry about the power its easy to control and I’m 5′9 160lbs you wont have any problem riding it, I was used to sport bikes and decided to change things up a bit and I have no regrets.

Well the cool thing about a V -Twin is the power delivery. It is very smooth and linear as opposed to most in line 4 cyl sport bikes. As long as you’re easy on the throttle it will be fine. As to the statements about spending that kind of money on a first bike, folks don’t seem to understand that money is relative. If having a bike you really like is a priority then the price doesn’t matter as much. Also $20,000 to some people is the same as $2,000 to others. Without knowing a persons financial status why would you bring cost into the equation.
